I Ching Hexagram 7 : 師 Shih / The Army

The hexagram consists of two trigrams, K'an and K'un, representing water and earth respectively. This symbolizes the water that is stored in the ground, hidden from view but always present as a source of power. Similarly, military strength is stored within the people, unseen during times of peace but ready to be utilized when needed. The two trigrams embody the concepts of danger within and obedience without. The key to this hexagram is the strong nine in the second position, which controls the other lines that are yielding. This line represents a commander, situated in the middle of one of the trigrams. However, as it is in the lower trigram, it signifies an efficient general who maintains order and obedience within the army through their authority.

The Judgment

To transform a group of individuals into a formidable fighting force, organization is key. However, discipline cannot be imposed through coercion alone. A charismatic leader who inspires and motivates their troops is necessary. This leader must be trusted by their superiors and given full responsibility during times of war. But war is a destructive force that should only be used as a last resort, like a potent medicine. It is important to approach it with caution and not rush into it recklessly.

Groundwater lies hidden beneath the earth's surface, just as a people's military might is concealed within its masses. When danger looms, every member of the community becomes a soldier, ready to defend their land. But when peace returns, they return to their daily lives. A leader who shows kindness and generosity to their people earns their loyalty, and a society governed with compassion becomes strong and resilient. Economic prosperity is the foundation of military power, and it is achieved through humane governance and policies that uplift the people. Only when the government and the people are bound together like groundwater and earth can a nation emerge victorious in war.
