I Ching Hexagram 63 : 既濟 Chi Chi / After Completion

The hexagram that follows T'ai PEACE (11) is a natural progression, representing the evolution of order from chaos. All elements have found their rightful place, from the strong lines in strong positions to the weak lines in weak positions. This is a highly favorable state, but it is important to remain vigilant. When perfect balance is achieved, any sudden movement can upset the delicate equilibrium and lead to disorder. The one strong line that has risen to the top, bringing complete order to the details, is followed by the other lines, each moving according to its nature. Suddenly, the hexagram P'i, STANDSTILL (12), emerges once again. Therefore, this hexagram signifies a time of climax that demands great caution.

The Judgment

Achievement attained. Triumph in minor affairs. Persistence leads to progress. In the commencement, favorable luck; In the conclusion, chaos.

The shift from the old era to the new has been completed. Essentially, everything has been organized, and only minor details require attention for success. However, it is crucial to maintain the correct mindset towards these details. It may seem as though everything is progressing on its own, which can lead to complacency and neglect of the finer points. This apathy is the root of all problems and will inevitably lead to decay. This is the typical pattern of history, but it is not an unbreakable law. Those who comprehend it can avoid its consequences through unwavering perseverance and caution.

The state of After Completion is symbolized by water over fire. Therefore, a wise person anticipates misfortune and prepares for it.

When a kettle of water is placed over a fire, the two elements enter into a relationship that generates energy, as evidenced by the production of steam. However, this dynamic creates a delicate balance that requires caution. If the water boils over, the fire is extinguished and its energy is lost. Conversely, if the heat is too intense, the water evaporates into the air. These elements, brought together to generate energy, are inherently antagonistic to one another. Only the most careful attention can prevent harm. Similarly, in life, there are moments when all forces are in equilibrium and working in harmony, creating the appearance of perfect order. During such times, only the wise can perceive the dangers lurking beneath the surface and take timely precautions to avert disaster.
