Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 62 : 小過 Hsiao Kuo / Preponderance of the Small

In the hexagram Ta Kuo, the strong lines dominate within weak lines at the top and bottom. However, in the current hexagram, weak lines are prevalent on the outside while strong lines are within. This creates an exceptional situation where the weak element must mediate with the outside world. When strong lines are outside, it is not exceptional, as seen in the hexagrams I and Chung Fu. When strong elements within preponderate, they enforce their will, leading to struggle and exceptional conditions. In contrast, the weak element in the present hexagram must exercise extraordinary prudence when occupying a position of authority for which they are inadequate by nature.

The Judgment

The dominance of the diminutive. Achievement. Persistence leads to progress. Minor tasks can be accomplished, but major ones should be avoided. The winged creature conveys a lesson: Ascending is unwise, staying grounded is wise. Exceptional prosperity.

Success is attainable through modesty and conscientiousness, but it is important to maintain personal dignity and avoid becoming subservient. We must adapt to the demands of the times and not expect great success if we lack the necessary strength. The message is to focus on humble pursuits rather than lofty ones. The hexagram suggests that a bird brings this message, as seen in the image of a soaring bird with weak lines outside. However, the bird should not strive for the impossible and instead return to its nest on earth. This is the message conveyed by the hexagram.

The Image

The mountain echoes with thunder, symbolizing the power of the small. Therefore, a person of high character prioritizes respect in their actions, mourning in their losses, and frugality in their spending.

The sound of thunder differs greatly depending on whether it echoes through the mountains or across the plains. In the mountains, it booms with a deafening intensity, while on the plains it is more subdued. This serves as a lesson for those who strive for excellence in their actions. They must remain steadfast in their duties, even if it means appearing insignificant to others. Their actions are guided by a strong sense of morality and empathy, prioritizing genuine emotion over empty formalities. They live modestly and humbly, standing out from the crowd by their exceptional character. But what truly sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to the underprivileged and marginalized.
