I Ching Hexagram 60 : 節 Chieh / Limitation

A lake has a finite capacity and will overflow if too much water is added. Therefore, boundaries must be established to regulate the water level. The illustration depicts water above and below, with the sky acting as a boundary between them. The term for boundaries in Chinese refers to the segments that divide a bamboo stem. In everyday life, it implies frugality and setting limits on expenses. In the ethical realm, it refers to the boundaries that a virtuous person establishes for their conduct - the boundaries of loyalty and selflessness.

The Judgment

"Boundaries. Achievement. Unbearable boundaries should not be persisted with."

Restrictions can be challenging, but they can also be effective. By living frugally during normal times, we can prepare ourselves for times of scarcity. Being thrifty can save us from embarrassment. Limitations are also crucial in regulating global conditions. In nature, there are set boundaries for summer and winter, day and night, which give the year its significance. Similarly, by setting limits on expenses, being economical can help preserve property and prevent harm to people. However, we must be mindful of the extent of limitations. If someone were to impose oppressive restrictions on their own nature, it could be harmful. And if someone were to go too far in imposing limitations on others, they would revolt. Therefore, it is essential to set boundaries even on limitations.

The Image

The reflection of water over a lake symbolizes boundaries. Therefore, a wise person establishes systems and standards, and evaluates the essence of morality and ethical behavior.

A lake is a finite entity, while water is infinite. The lake can only hold a certain amount of the endless supply of water, which is its unique characteristic. Similarly, in human life, individuals gain importance by making distinctions and setting boundaries. Therefore, the challenge lies in defining these boundaries, which are the foundation of morality. Boundless opportunities are not suitable for humans, as their lives would dissolve into the infinite. To become strong, individuals need the limitations imposed by duty and willingly accepted. Only by surrounding themselves with these limitations and determining their own responsibilities can individuals achieve significance as free spirits.
