Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 58 : 兌 Tui / The Joyous, Lake

The hexagram, akin to the sun, is one of the eight created by doubling a trigram. The trigram Tui represents the youngest child and is symbolized by a smiling body of water, with its attribute being happiness. Despite appearances, it is not the yielding quality of the top line that brings joy. The yielding or dark principle's attribute is not joy, but rather sadness. However, the presence of two strong lines within the hexagram expresses joy through gentleness. Therefore, true joy is rooted in inner strength and stability, which is then expressed outwardly as yielding and gentle.

The Judgment

The contagious nature of a joyful atmosphere can lead to success, but it must be grounded in steadfastness to avoid becoming reckless. The heart should be filled with truth and strength, while social interactions should be marked by gentleness. This is the path to a harmonious relationship with both humanity and divinity, and the key to achieving great things. While intimidation may yield temporary results, it is only through friendliness that one can truly win the hearts of others. When people are filled with joy, they are willing to endure any hardship, even death itself. Such is the power of joy over all people.

When a lake evaporates, it gradually dries up. However, when two lakes are connected, they don't dry up as easily because they replenish each other. The same principle applies to knowledge. Knowledge should be a refreshing and invigorating force, which can only be achieved through stimulating conversations with like-minded individuals. By discussing and applying the truths of life with congenial friends, learning becomes multi-faceted and takes on a cheerful lightness. In contrast, self-taught individuals often have a one-sided and ponderous approach to learning.
