Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 57 : 巽 Sun / The Gentle (The Penetrating, Wind)

The Sun trigram is one of the eight doubled trigrams, representing the eldest child and symbolizing either wind or wood. Its attribute is gentleness, which can still penetrate like the wind or the roots of growing wood. The rigid and immovable dark principle is dissolved by the penetrating light principle, which subordinates itself in gentleness. In nature, it is the wind that disperses gathered clouds, leaving the sky clear and serene. In human life, it is the penetrating clarity of judgment that thwarts all hidden motives. In the life of a community, it is the powerful influence of a great individual that uncovers and breaks up intrigues that shun the light of day.

The Judgment

Achievement through modesty is key. It is beneficial to have a destination in mind and to seek guidance from those who are wise and accomplished.

The subtle impact of gradual penetration is far more effective than a sudden attack. Rather than violating, one should strive to exert a constant and unrelenting influence. Although these results may not be immediately noticeable, they are more enduring and comprehensive. To achieve such outcomes, a clear objective is necessary, as the penetrating force must always move in the same direction. Even the weakest of forces can succeed by submitting to a skilled leader who can establish order.

The Image

Successive winds: The symbol of gentle infiltration. Therefore, the wise person disseminates their directives widely and accomplishes their goals.

The wind's ability to penetrate is directly linked to its unrelenting nature, granting it immense power that is wielded through time. Similarly, a leader's ideas must penetrate the collective consciousness of their people, requiring a sustained effort of education and guidance. Only when these ideas are fully internalized can they be acted upon. Attempting to act without laying the groundwork will only cause fear and resistance.
