I Ching Hexagram 56 : 旅 Lu / The Wanderer

Kên, the mountain, remains steadfast while Li, the fire, blazes fiercely above without delay. As a result, the two trigrams do not remain united. The fate of the traveler is often one of unfamiliar territories and distance.




The Judgment

Achievement in Humility. Persistence leads to prosperity for those who wander.

When one is a wanderer and stranger, they should avoid being gruff or overbearing. With a small circle of acquaintances, it's important not to act superior. Being cautious and reserved can protect oneself from harm. By being kind and helpful to others, one can achieve success. A wanderer has no permanent home; their dwelling is the road. It's crucial to remain honest and steadfast, only staying in safe places and associating with good people. This will bring good fortune and allow them to travel without trouble.




The Image

On the mountain, there is a fire: It depicts the image of a wanderer. Therefore, a wise person should be level-headed and careful when administering punishments and should not prolong legal disputes.

When the grass on a mountain ignites, it illuminates the surroundings with a brilliant glow. However, the flames do not remain stagnant, but rather spread to new sources of fuel. This occurrence is brief in nature. Similarly, consequences and legal actions should be swift and transitory, avoiding prolonged disputes. Correctional facilities should serve as temporary accommodations, akin to a guesthouse, rather than permanent residences.
