I Ching Hexagram 53 : 漸 Chien / Development (Gradual Progress)

The hexagram consists of Sun (wood, penetration) above, representing the external, and Kên (mountain, stillness) below, representing the internal. A tree growing on a mountain follows its natural course and grows steadily, firmly rooted in the ground. This symbolizes gradual progress, step by step. The qualities of the trigrams also reflect this: stillness within prevents hasty actions, while penetration without allows for growth and advancement.

The Judgment

The process of a person following another to their home is a slow one, requiring the completion of various formalities before any marriage can occur. This principle of gradual development can be applied to other situations as well, particularly in cases where cooperation and correct relationships are essential, such as in the appointment of an official. Rushing into action is unwise, as the proper course of development must be allowed to take place. This is also true when attempting to influence others, as the cultivation of one's own personality is crucial for any lasting impact. The gradual nature of this process requires perseverance to prevent slow progress from fizzling out entirely.
