Hexagram Analysis
I Ching Hexagram 51 : 震 Chên / The Arousing (Shock, Thunder)
The hexagram Chên embodies the firstborn child who takes charge with vigor and might. A strong yang line emerges beneath two yin lines and thrusts upwards with great force. This motion is so intense that it instills dread. It is represented by thunder, which erupts from the ground and induces fear and quivering.
The Judgment
The awe-inspiring presence of the divine within the depths of the earth can strike fear into the hearts of humans, but this fear is not necessarily negative. In fact, it can lead to great joy and celebration. When a person has truly experienced fear and trembling, they become immune to external terrors. Even if thunder rolls and terrorizes those around them, they remain calm and reverent, allowing sacred rituals to continue uninterrupted. This is the kind of inner strength and seriousness that leaders must possess, so that they can remain unshaken in the face of any challenge.
The Image
The ongoing rumble of thunder instills a sense of unease and trepidation. A person of high moral character always holds deep respect for the appearance of a higher power; they organize their life and introspect to ensure that no hidden resistance to the divine will exists within them. Therefore, reverence serves as the bedrock of genuine civilization.
