Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 46 : 升 Shêng / Pushing Upward

The Sun trigram, located at the bottom, symbolizes wood, while the upper K'un trigram represents the earth. The concept of wood growing upwards from the earth is intertwined with this. Unlike the meaning of the Progress hexagram, which denotes forward movement, the act of pushing upward requires exertion, much like a plant requires energy to grow through the soil. This hexagram is associated with the willpower required for success, despite the effort involved. Progress emphasizes expansion, while Pushing Upward signifies a vertical ascent, a direct rise from obscurity and lowliness to power and influence.

The Judgment

Success is achieved by striving upwards. It is important to seek guidance from those who are wise and experienced. Do not let fear hold you back. Traveling towards the south will bring you good luck.

The ascent of positive elements faces no hindrance and thus results in triumph. This ascent is not achieved through force, but through humility and flexibility. As the individual is carried by the favorable circumstances of the moment, progress is made. Seeking counsel from authoritative figures is necessary, but there is no need for apprehension as success is guaranteed. However, action must be taken, as productivity (interpreted as "the south") leads to prosperity.

The Image

Wood grows within the earth, embodying the essence of Pushing Upward. Therefore, a person of exceptional character accumulates small achievements to reach great heights.

Wood in the earth grows upward without haste or rest, adapting to obstacles and bending around them. Similarly, a person of excellence is steadfast in their character and never halts in their advancement.
