Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 44 : 姤 Kou / Coming to Meet

The hexagram reveals a scenario where the force of darkness, previously vanquished, sneaks back in unexpectedly from within and below. The feminine energy takes the initiative to approach the masculine energy, leading to an unfavorable and perilous situation. It is crucial to recognize and prevent any potential consequences promptly. This hexagram is associated with the fifth month of the year, as during the summer solstice, the power of darkness gradually regains dominance.

The Judgment

It is said that encountering this formidable individual is inevitable. Their strength and prowess are undeniable, but it is advised against forming a union with them.

The emergence of a lesser element is depicted in the image of a bold individual who effortlessly yields themselves, thus capturing power. This would be unattainable if the strong and light-giving element hadn't also made a mutual effort. The inferior aspect appears so innocuous and enticing that a person finds pleasure in it; it seems so tiny and frail that they believe they can interact with it without repercussions. The lesser individual ascends only because the superior person fails to recognize them as a threat, hence granting them power. Had there been resistance from the beginning, they could never have achieved influence. The moment of COMING TO MEET holds further significance. While the weak generally should not approach the strong, there are instances when this bears profound meaning. When heaven and earth unite, all beings thrive; when a leader and their advisor come together, the world attains balance. Elements destined to be linked and interdependent must meet each other in the middle. However, such a union must be devoid of dishonest hidden intentions, or it will cause harm.

The Image

The wind under the sky symbolizes the act of meeting. This is how a leader should behave when spreading their orders and making them known to all directions.

This hexagram depicts an immature person using charm to influence someone in power. The powerful person is attracted but it may not last. Beware of seemingly harmless but potentially dangerous situations that attract attention. Don't fear meetings with those in different positions, but be wary of temptations arising from power differentials. Combat them early on. Honorable and balanced relationships can be positive, but motives matter.
