Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 43 : 夬 Kuai / Break-through (Resoluteness)

The hexagram embodies a momentous breakthrough, akin to a swollen river bursting through its dikes or a sudden cloudburst. In the realm of human affairs, it signals the gradual disappearance of those of lesser character. Their influence is waning, and through decisive action, a breakthrough is achieved, leading to a shift in circumstances. This hexagram is associated with the third month of the year, spanning April and May.

The Judgment

To achieve a breakthrough, one must boldly bring the issue to the attention of those in power. The truth must be spoken without hesitation. Beware of danger and inform your community. Violence is not the solution, but taking action is.

Even if a single individual of lesser merit holds a position of power, they can oppress those of greater worth. Even a solitary lingering passion can cloud one's judgment, for passion and reason cannot coexist. Thus, an unrelenting battle is necessary for the triumph of good. However, in this resolute struggle, there are certain principles that must be upheld for success. Firstly, determination must be founded on a combination of strength and kindness. Secondly, there can be no compromise with evil; it must be openly discredited at all times. Furthermore, we must not overlook our own flaws and weaknesses. Thirdly, the fight cannot be waged through direct force. If we brand evil, it will arm itself, and if we engage in a tit-for-tat battle, we will ultimately lose because we become entangled in hatred and passion. Therefore, it is crucial to begin by guarding ourselves against the faults we have identified. In doing so, we deprive evil of an opponent, and its weapons become dull. We should also avoid confronting our own flaws head-on, as this only strengthens them. Ultimately, the most effective way to combat evil is to make significant progress in the pursuit of good.

The Image

As the lake surges towards the sky, it symbolizes a breakthrough. A wise person shares their wealth with others and doesn't rely solely on their own virtues.

When a lake's water reaches the heavens, a cloudburst may be imminent. The wise person heeds this warning and prevents a catastrophic collapse. If one accumulates wealth solely for oneself, disregarding others, a collapse is inevitable. All gatherings eventually disperse. Therefore, the wise person distributes while accumulating. Similarly, in developing one's character, one must avoid becoming stubborn and remain open to new experiences through rigorous self-reflection.
