Hexagram Analysis
I Ching Hexagram 41 : 损 Sun / Decrease
The hexagram symbolizes a shift in power from the lower trigram to the upper, as the third line, once strong, has ascended to the top, while the top line, once weak, has taken its place. This results in a clear decrease of what is below in favor of what is above. It is a complete and utter decline. Just as a building's foundation may weaken while its upper walls strengthen, the entire structure may lose its stability. Similarly, a decrease in the prosperity of the people in favor of the government is a complete and utter decline. The hexagram's message is to demonstrate how this redistribution of wealth can occur without causing the nation's sources of wealth or its lower classes to falter.
The Judgment
The concept of decrease should not always be viewed negatively. Both increase and decrease have their own timing. It is crucial to comprehend the timing and not attempt to conceal poverty with superficiality. During times of limited resources, simplicity can reveal one's inner truth, and one should not feel ashamed of it. In fact, simplicity can provide the necessary inner strength for future endeavors. The external beauty of civilization, including religious practices, need not be a concern if simplicity is embraced. The power of the content can compensate for the simplicity of form by drawing on the strength of the inner attitude. There is no need to present false appearances to a higher power. Even with limited resources, the sentiment of the heart can be expressed.
The Image
As the mountain looms above, the lake at its base slowly evaporates, diminishing in size. This reduction benefits the mountain, as it absorbs the moisture and becomes enriched. The mountain represents unwavering strength, which can transform into anger if left unchecked. The lake, on the other hand, symbolizes unbridled joy that can escalate into destructive impulses, draining one's life force. Therefore, a decrease is necessary; stillness can quell anger, and limitations can control instincts. By reducing the lower powers of the psyche, the higher aspects of the soul can flourish.
