Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 39 : 蹇 Chien / Obstruction

The hexagram depicts a perilous chasm ahead and an unscalable peak behind. We find ourselves besieged by hindrances; however, the mountain's quality of stillness implies a solution to our predicament. The hexagram symbolizes obstacles that arise over time but can and must be surmounted. Thus, all guidance provided is aimed at conquering them.

The Judgment

"Blockage hinders progress in the southwest, while the northeast lacks advancement. It is beneficial to seek guidance from a wise individual. Success is achieved through persistence."

The southwest and northeast regions present different challenges. In the southwest, obstacles cannot be tackled head-on, so it's best to retreat and regroup with like-minded individuals under capable leadership. This may seem counterintuitive, but it's a necessary step towards overcoming the obstacles. Perseverance and a steadfast focus on the end goal will ultimately lead to success. Temporary setbacks can even be beneficial for personal growth. Adversity, therefore, has value.

The Image

The mountain's water symbolizes obstruction, prompting individuals to focus on self-improvement and character development. This is the path of the wise person.

Challenges and barriers force individuals to reflect on themselves. Instead of blaming others and lamenting their circumstances, those who are exceptional look inward to find their mistakes. This self-examination transforms external obstacles into opportunities for personal growth and learning.
