I Ching Hexagram 3 : 屯 Chun / Difficulty at the Beginning

The hexagram known as Chun symbolizes a blade of grass pushing through an obstacle as it emerges from the earth. This represents the concept of "difficulty at the beginning." The hexagram illustrates how heaven and earth create individual beings, but their initial encounter is fraught with challenges. The lower trigram, Arousing, signifies upward motion and is represented by thunder. The upper trigram, Abysmal, represents danger and downward motion, and is symbolized by rain. This creates a state of chaos and abundance, with thunder and rain filling the air. However, the chaos eventually dissipates. As the Abysmal sinks, the upward motion overcomes the danger. A thunderstorm brings relief from tension, and all things can breathe freely once again.

Starting with challenges leads to great achievements, progressing with persistence. One should not embark on anything alone. It is beneficial to assign assistants.

The period of growth is often accompanied by challenges, much like the process of giving birth. These obstacles arise due to the abundance of ideas and concepts that are vying for manifestation. Everything is in a state of flux, but with perseverance, there is a possibility of achieving great success, despite the potential risks. When one embarks on such a journey, everything is still undefined and obscure. Therefore, it is crucial to exercise caution and avoid making hasty decisions that could lead to disaster. It is also essential to seek the support of others to navigate through the chaos. However, this does not mean that one should remain passive. Instead, they must actively participate and provide inspiration and guidance.

At the start of a journey, one may encounter clouds and thunder, symbolizing difficulty. However, a wise individual can bring clarity to chaos and establish order.

Similarly, the wise individual must organize the jumbled mess of new beginnings, much like separating tangled silk threads and bundling them into skeins.
