I Ching Hexagram 25 : 無妄 Wu Wang / Innocence (The Unexpected)

The hexagram Ch'ien represents heaven above, while Chên symbolizes movement below. The lower trigram Chên is influenced by the strong line it receives from heaven above. When movement aligns with the laws of heaven, individuals are pure and honest, with a natural and genuine mindset. Reflection and ulterior motives cloud the truth and innocence of nature. Nature that lacks direction from the spirit is not genuine, but rather degenerate. The hexagram encompasses the concept of the natural, as well as the fundamental and unexpected.



The Judgment

The state of innocence leads to ultimate triumph, but only through persistent effort. If an individual is not in alignment with their true self, they will experience misfortune. It is unwise for them to pursue any endeavors until they have resolved their inner conflicts.

Human beings possess an inherent goodness bestowed upon them by the universe, which serves as a moral compass for their actions. By dedicating oneself to this divine spirit within, one can achieve a pure innocence that enables them to act with unwavering righteousness, without any ulterior motives or self-interest. This intuitive certainty leads to great success and progress through perseverance. However, not all instincts are aligned with this higher sense of morality, only those that are in harmony with the will of the universe. Acting impulsively without regard for what is right can only bring misfortune, as Confucius warns, "Those who stray from innocence will find themselves without the blessings of the universe."

Thunder echoes throughout the heavens as all things return to their natural state of purity. The ancient rulers, who were abundant in virtue and in sync with the era, nurtured and supported all living beings.

As the spring season arrives and the thunderous life force stirs beneath the sky, all things begin to sprout and flourish. Nature's creative energy imbues all beings with the pure innocence of their original state. This same principle applies to wise leaders of humanity, who draw upon their spiritual wealth to nurture all forms of life and culture, and to promote their growth at the opportune moment.
