I Ching Hexagram 24 : 復 Fu / Return (The Turning Point)

The concept of a pivotal moment arises when the dark lines have successfully displaced all the light lines from the hexagram, only to be replaced by a new light line from below. The era of darkness has come to an end. The winter solstice marks the triumph of light. This hexagram is associated with the eleventh month, the month of the solstice (December-January).

The Judgment

The path of life is a cycle of "coming and going." Success is achieved by navigating this path without error, and with the support of friends who come without blame. The journey may have its ups and downs, but ultimately, it leads to a return. It is important to have a destination in mind, as it furthers one's journey.

Following a period of deterioration, a turning point emerges. The potent light that was once banished returns, and there is a natural movement that arises without force. The upper trigram, characterized by devotion, allows for an effortless transformation of the old into the new. This transition aligns with the current time and causes no harm. Communities of like-minded individuals form, but their unity is not exclusive and does not promote selfishness. The concept of RETURN is rooted in the natural cycle of life, and everything occurs at its appointed time without the need for artificial acceleration. All movements occur in six stages, with the seventh stage bringing about a return. The number seven represents the emergence of young light after a period of great darkness. This shift from stillness to motion is a natural occurrence.

The rumbling of the earth signifies a turning point. In ancient times, rulers would block off passes during the solstice. Travelers and merchants would stay put, and leaders would not venture out to other regions.

In China, the winter solstice has long been a time for rest and rejuvenation. This tradition lives on through the practice of taking time off during the new year. During the winter months, the life force, represented by thunder and the Arousing, remains dormant underground. Movement is just beginning, and it is crucial to allow it to strengthen through rest, rather than dissipating prematurely. This principle applies to all situations where energy is renewing itself. Whether it's recovering from illness or reconciling after a disagreement, it's important to approach these situations with tenderness and care, allowing them to blossom into something beautiful.
