Hexagram Analysis
I Ching Hexagram 23 : 剝 Po / Splitting Apart
The looming darkness threatens to rise and overthrow the final strong, bright line by slowly eroding its foundation. The weaker, shadowy forces triumph over the strong not through direct confrontation, but by chipping away at it until it crumbles. The hexagram's lines form the shape of a house, with the top line representing the roof. As the roof collapses, so too does the entire structure. This hexagram corresponds to the ninth month of the year, when the yin energy grows stronger and threatens to overtake the yang energy completely.
The Judgment
During this period, the weaker individuals are making strides and are on the verge of overpowering the remaining strong and superior ones. Given these circumstances, which are a result of the era, it is not advisable for the superior individual to embark on any endeavors. The appropriate conduct during such unfavorable times can be inferred from the symbols and their characteristics. The lower hexagram represents the earth, which embodies traits of obedience and loyalty. The upper hexagram represents the mountain, which embodies stillness. This implies that one should acquiesce to the unfavorable period and remain tranquil. This is not a matter of human intervention but rather a result of the temporal conditions, which, in accordance with the laws of the universe, exhibit a cycle of growth and decline, abundance and scarcity. It is impossible to counteract these temporal conditions. Therefore, it is not cowardice but sagacity to submit and refrain from action.
The Image
A mountain's stability is dependent on its foundation. A narrow and steep mountain lacks a broad base and is prone to toppling over. On the other hand, a broad and great mountain rises out of the earth with strength and tranquility. Similarly, those in positions of power should rest on the broad foundation of the people and be generous and benevolent like the earth that carries all. This will ensure their position is as secure as a mountain in its tranquility.
