Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 19 : 臨 Lin / Approach

The word "lin" in Chinese has a vast array of meanings that cannot be fully captured by any single word in another language. According to the Book of Changes, its primary definition is "to become great," which refers to the two strong lines that rise from the bottom of the hexagram, symbolizing the expansion of light-giving power. This definition is then broadened to encompass the idea of approach, particularly from a lower position. Finally, it includes the attitude of a person in a high position towards those beneath them, as well as the act of engaging in affairs. This hexagram is associated with the twelfth month of the year, when the light power begins to ascend again after the winter solstice.

The Judgment

Success is achieved through a strategic approach, and persistence is key. However, caution is advised in the eighth month, as there may be unfortunate events.

The hexagram signifies a time of optimistic progress and happiness. Spring is on the horizon, and with joy and patience, people from all walks of life can come together. Success is guaranteed, but it requires determination and persistence to fully take advantage of this auspicious time. However, it's important to remember that spring doesn't last forever. In the eighth month, the situation will reverse, and only two strong, light lines will remain, retreating instead of advancing. It's crucial to be aware of this change in advance. By anticipating and confronting evil before it even begins to stir, we can overcome it.

The Image

Approaching the lake, we see the earth above it. This symbolizes the act of approaching. A wise person never tires of teaching and has boundless capacity for protecting and accepting all people.

The lake and earth meet, symbolizing the connection between those in positions of power and those below them. The image is split, representing the attitude of the powerful towards the less fortunate. Like the lake's unfathomable depths, the wise are always ready to teach and guide humanity. And like the earth's vast expanse, the wise care for and support all people, without exception.
