Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 14 : 大有 Ta Yu / Possession in Great Measure

The radiance of the celestial blaze illuminates far and wide, revealing all that was once hidden. The humble fifth line takes precedence, with the stronger lines in harmony with it. Modesty and kindness in a position of power attract abundance and prosperity.

The Judgment

Achieving abundance. Unmatched triumph.

Strength and clarity are united, as indicated by the two trigrams. The extent of one's possessions is determined by fate and timing. How can a weak line hold onto and possess strong lines? Through the power of unselfish modesty. The current time is favorable, with inner strength, external clarity, and cultural refinement. Power is being expressed in a graceful and controlled manner, leading to ultimate success and wealth.

The Image

The symbol of "Great Measure" is represented by "Fire in heaven above," signifying the concept of Possession. The wise individual restrains malevolence and promotes virtue, thus aligning with the kind intentions of the universe.

The radiant sun above, illuminating all on earth, represents a vast ownership. However, such ownership requires responsible management. The sun exposes both positive and negative aspects of life. Humanity must confront and restrain the negative while nurturing and advancing the positive. This is the way to fulfill the kind intentions of a higher power, who seeks only goodness and not malevolence.
