Hexagram Analysis

I Ching Hexagram 12 : 否 P'i / Standstill (Stagnation)

The hexagram that follows is the antithesis of the previous one. The sky is receding further and further away, while the earth is sinking deeper into the abyss. The forces of creation are not in harmony. It is a time of stagnation and regression. This hexagram is associated with the seventh month of the year, when the peak has passed and the onset of autumnal decay is evident.

The Judgment

When progress halts, the wicked do not aid the persistence of the virtuous individual. The mighty depart, while the insignificant draw near.

The connection between heaven and earth has been severed, leaving everything numb. The two realms are now unrelated, and chaos reigns on earth. Darkness resides within, while light is without. Weakness is within, while harshness is without. The inferior are within, while the superior are without. The path of the inferior is upward, while the path of the superior is downward. However, the superior do not waver from their principles, even if they are unable to exert their influence. They remain true to their beliefs and retreat into seclusion.

The Image

When the heavens and earth refuse to come together, it is a sign of stagnation. The wise individual must rely on their own intrinsic value to overcome obstacles and should not seek to be rewarded with material gain.

In times when mistrust pervades public life due to the influence of those of lesser character, any productive efforts become futile as the foundation is flawed. Thus, a person of higher caliber understands their role in such circumstances and resists the temptation of alluring offers to engage in public affairs. Such involvement would only expose them to danger, as they cannot condone the unethical behavior of others. Instead, they conceal their true worth and retreat into solitude.
