In this hexagram, the Receptive exerts its influence from above, descending downwards, while the Creative exerts its influence from below, ascending upwards. This hexagram is associated with the first month of the year (February-March), during which the natural world readies itself for the coming of spring.

The Judgment

"Harmony. The insignificant fades away, The significant draws near. Favorable luck. Achievement."

During this time in nature, there is a sense of heaven on earth. The powers of heaven and earth unite in perfect harmony, bringing peace and blessings to all living things. In the human world, there is social harmony as those in positions of power show favor to those who are considered lowly or inferior, putting an end to all feuds. At the center of this hexagram is the light principle, with the dark principle on the outside. The light has a powerful influence, while the dark is submissive, allowing each to receive its due. When the good elements of society are in control, the evil elements come under their influence and change for the better. When the spirit of heaven rules in a person, their animal nature also comes under its influence and takes its appropriate place. The individual lines enter the hexagram from below and leave at the top. The small, weak, and evil elements are about to depart, while the great, strong, and good elements are moving up, bringing good fortune and success.

The Image

The union of sky and land symbolizes tranquility. As such, a leader must divide and fulfill the path of the cosmos, promoting and managing its offerings to assist the populace.

The interplay between heaven and earth results in a time of abundant growth and prosperity, which must be managed by those in positions of power. This is achieved through the process of division, as humans mark the passage of time with the changing of seasons and navigate the vastness of space with cardinal directions. By imposing structure on the seemingly chaotic natural world, humans are able to harness its potential for productivity. This requires careful consideration of when and where to cultivate crops and other resources, in order to maximize their yield. The symbiotic relationship between humanity and nature is one of mutual benefit, as humans work to cultivate and nurture the natural world, which in turn rewards them with its bounty.
